Lound continous mains hum - 2009/05/27 19:07I've recently purchased a G - Dec 30 second hand from e-bay. Unfortunately it seems to have a fault: a loud mains hum as soon as you switch on. I'm sure it is this because the volume has no affect of the hum, neither what preset I'm currently using. Anyone out there can help????

My GDEC30 does that too - it doesn't affect my sound, it's just annoying continually humming away.
It started doing it about 4 months after I got a warranty repair carried out on the GDEC, just outside the UK Fender warranty period. Grr. I'm guessing the mains transformer inside is what's humming but without a clue as to what I'm doing I figured opening it up to have a look could potentially be dangerous.
Maybe one of the other guys on here who have been inside their amp can advise?
Sorry I can't help, but you're not alone!

I decided to open up my GDEC and take out the amp section to investigate my hum/buzz noise.
All cable connections are secure, and all cables screwed to the case appear to be sound - I tried to tighten them further but they wouldn't tighten.
I applied power with the amp in pieces and identified where the buzz is coming from. It's coming from the power transformer (if that's the correct term) - the mains plug goes in the back, then wires run directly from that to the wound transformer.
Pressing down on the plastic case (using a plastic rod I had) stopped it almost completely. There's was still a tiny hum, of the sort I'd expect from a hi-fi amplifier perhaps.
My question is how do I stop the buzz? I tried to tighten the bolts on the housing of the transformer which hold it on the chassis, but they are already tight. I'm guessing that the windings are somehow loose inside the housing, but I'm not sure if I can take it out to check.
I'll see if I can get good pictures of the housing so I can better explain what I mean.
Thanks in advance.
